Community press advocate Pachico Seares, editor in chief of leading Cebu broadsheet Sun.Star Cebu, is this year’s Gawad Plaridel Awardee following the lead of Eggy Apostol (print), Vilma Santos (film), Tiya Dely Magpayo (radio) and Cheche Lazaro (TV).
This is the first time the award was given to a man. All four awardees in the previous years were, obviously, women.
Seares is recognized for his outstanding work in the Cebu daily, as well as championing the cause of Community Journalism despite the harrowing trials and tremendous woes they have experienced over the years.
The award was given to Seares in a ceremony held at the UP Cine Adarna this afternoon. Mass Communications students from all over the metro graced the occasion. Former Plaridel Awardees Cheche Lazaro and Vilma Santos were also present.
The occasion would have been a perfect way to commemorate the efforts of community journalists across the country, but several technical difficulties just had to get in the way. Moreover, Seares’ lecture on the future of community journalism had students clingng to both their ink pens and tape recorders because, no offense meant, the good editor in chief spoke quite inaudibly. Thank God he had a Powerpoint presentation to accompany his lecture, otherwise it would’ve been really hard to understand the meat of his speech.
In any case, this is Gawad Plaridel’s 5th year in recognizing outstanding media practitioners who champion the cause of press freedom in aiding our country’s development. Initiated by UP-CMC former dean Nicanor Tiongson, the UP Gawad Plaridel is given every year by the UP College of Mass Communication.

@Jeff hmmm, talaga? Wala bang quotable quotes? He mentioned a lot of community journalism problems sa beginning eh, I managed to grab some. Hehe. And yeah, that quote stood out, although I don’t think it means something of the capitalist sort. I think in-explain naman nya yon sa video ata, or sa speech.

@JM well there’s that pero i guess inantok lang ako nang bonggang-bongga sa kanya.
i swear, a gay blogger would give a better lecture! think about it, both print and broadcast media practitioners have been honored but not a single one from the new media has made it.
i nominate mcvie! go go go! winner na to!
